tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-222380852010-02-10T21:20:21.280-08:00I'm on two wheels2006 Yamaha Road Star 1700 Silverado- Pearl White. Purchased from a private party with only 1815 miles on it. Weighs 780 lbs. with fuel and the new hard bags. My first lesson was 11/04 took MSF class in Fullerton and away I went. This is my 4th motorcycle if you can believe that. So far I put 26,500 miles on the Road Star since I bought it 09/27/07, The ODO shows 28,300 total miles.

However, I did not want to do the ride from Chuy's in Santa Clarita to Jalama so decided just to ride direct to Jalama and wait for the arriving riders. Along for the trip with me is Luis and Minita on their V-Star 1300. Since the Pashnit meeting was the primary reason to go I did not see having a bunch of people ride up and wait for some folks they do not know. </div><br /><span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">The ride up was flawless and <a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4139-713897.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" kt="true" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4139-713271.JPG" width="320" /></a><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4138-795903.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" kt="true" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4138-795513.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />we stopped on the Pacific Coast for a break before hitting Oxnard and we went on further to Carpinteria for fuel before continuing to Jalama. </span><br /><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/100_3378-725935.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; cssfloat: right; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" kt="true" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/100_3378-725903.JPG" width="313" /></a><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/100_3372-739450.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" kt="true" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/100_3372-739447.JPG" width="320" /></a>We arrived at Jalama Beach over a fairly poor 14 mile long road <a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/100_3370-790447.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="280" kt="true" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/100_3370-790409.JPG" width="320" /></a> <a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4141-775240.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" kt="true" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4141-774741.JPG" width="320" /></a></div></div><br />and surprised to find one member already there. These designations have been bestowed by our organization and are considered official pronouncements that can't be ignored. This is not any sort of negative reflection on the fine job done by our esteemed and brilliant leader but rather a recognition that the group has expanded and moved into a new dimension of enlightenment and splinterhood.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="background-color: #fff2cc;">The Splinter Group leadership consists of fellow Fringe Members Johney as President and Founder, Tail Gunner & Ride Captain of this vibrant and potentially world-wide movement, along with Richard V. as Vice President. We have appointed all of the first group attendees as Vice Presidents in our new Splinter Group, but until they join up and agree to add their names to our roster will just state that there are about 7 potential members in line for possible appointments as Vice President Fringees, there will also be a Lady rider/member group known as <em><strong>Ladies of Fringe</strong></em>. Remember you have to be careful who you associate with. </span><br /><br /><span style="background-color: #fff2cc;"><span style="color: red;"><strong>If you wish to become a fringe member of this new "Splinter Group" a lengthy application process along with a physical exam and motorcycle skill review will not be needed, just show up.</strong></span></span></div><br />Meetings will continue to be Wednesday Flag Ceremony and Thursday fellowship for Splinters and fringees.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">A suitable patch to be added proudly to your vest will be available soon to announce your new association with The Splinter Group. Turns out Charlie was just meeting with us before a trip to Wrightwood but made for a nice little meeting with the 4 of us. We rode over to the Best Buy parking lot and met up with Luis and Minita on their V-Star 1300. I have it all mapped out so off we go with me in front, and Johney as tail-gunner. We arrive in Ojai and Johney takes the point. Highway 33 out of Ojai is a serious road for motorcycles especially the sport bike riders. If you are bored with Ortega Hwy then this is the road for you.<a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/valleypic2-33-712920.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 209px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/valleypic2-33-712916.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><br />Everything goes quite well, although at one of the early tight curves I did need to lean more than I had anticipated as the road tightened up and it's good to know I did not panic or do something dumb and just pushed on the bar and rode it out. This is not a road to let your mind wander or lose concentration as we soon find out.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/tunnelbehind-777464.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 209px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/tunnelbehind-777400.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/valleypic-777377.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 209px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/valleypic-777369.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a>There are a couple tunnels and then it opens up into a wide valley area for a couple miles.<a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/tunnels-33-739895.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 209px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/tunnels-33-739889.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><br />Inside a tunnel.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br />At the turn-off to Lockwood Valley Rd. first johney turns, then I follow with Luis and Minita right behind me, but I hear a strange scrapping noise and there's a horn blowing so we pull over. Ken is down in a heap on the curve onto Lockwood. There is gravel there and I noticed it when I made the turn. We run back and a motorist in a truck has stopped and Ken is sitting on the road with the bike facing sort of back where he came from. Some sport bikers come up and offer help and we get the bike upright and I start it to move off the road. <a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4123-712893.JPG"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4123-712311.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><br /> Ken is helped up and seems in fairly good shape due to wearing a heavy jacket and the engine guard did it's job as well. There is not a scratch on the windshield, muffler or even the engine guard, but the right mirror is gone and right foot peg on the guard is gone also. Scratches on his saddlebag, and broken right grip plus it's tweaked and needs loosening and moved up. <a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4125-743685.JPG"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4125-743262.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4124-743188.JPG"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 232px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4124-742837.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /> It's rideable and Ken says he can continue so after a thorough check on him and the bike, off we go with some extra care and concern for how he is doing.<br /><br /> <a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4126-747327.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4126-746832.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4127-769929.JPG"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4127-769489.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br />Johney and I run back and snap a couple pictures of the scene and discover a very fresh single skid mark giving us a possible indication of how it might have happened. Total miles wound up at about 185 for the whole trip. Our ride leader is somewhat new and on a couple occasions while on the freeway, we moved over to the far right lane in preparation for our upcoming exit but it put us right in the path of oncoming traffic heading on to the freeway. I take issue with that as I don't want to be in the lane next to cars entering the freeway when we could have stayed in a lane or two over until after passing the on-ramp with heavy traffic. The trials of riding with larger groups I guess. There were no problems but still thought it might have been better handled.<br /><br />Looks like <strong>S.T.A.B.</strong> or Start Trying All Brands may become our new alternate STAR chapter name as there were at least 4 Honda Gold Wings and 4 Harleys, 1 Victory Vision and possibly 1 or two other brands in the parking lot Saturday morning. That really is no problem at all but an indication that Yamaha may be falling behind the times by not keeping the styling and technology up to date with their big cruiser/Tourers. I'm still happy with my Road Star and would only buy another one if something happened to this one. Don't ask Chuck what he would do, he dumped the V-Star 1300 and bought a new Gold Wing.<br /><br />Turns out this was probably my best ride through Ortega since I only really lost sight of the motorcycle in front of me one or maybe two times while heading downhill but I caught up fairly rapidly so I did not hold up the rest of the group very much at all. At least that's how I perceived the ride and I got no negative feed back from anyone as I had when in another ride leaders group-I just don't ride in his group any more.<br /><br />Pictures will be up shortly...<strong>HERE IS A LINK TO PICTURES OF THIS RIDE ALONG WITH A BUNCH OF PICTURES OF THE ROSE PARADE FLOATS IN PASADENA, 1 DAY AFTER THE ROSE PARADE.</strong><table style="width:194px;"><tr><td align="center" style="height:194px;background:url(http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/transparent_album_background.gif) no-repeat left"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/rider67/ROSEORTEGA1910?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_mf0Rqz4iDH0/S0-0RDmlaNE/AAAAAAAAWOQ/w7VTgPAYNxg/s160-c/ROSEORTEGA1910.jpg" width="160" height="160" style="margin:1px 0 0 4px;"></a></td></tr><tr><td style="text-align:center;font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:11px"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/rider67/ROSEORTEGA1910?feat=embedwebsite" style="color:#4D4D4D;font-weight:bold;text-decoration:none;">ROSE-ORTEGA 1--9-10</a></td></tr></table><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/22238085-4955406311641189717?l=www.startriding.com%2Fblog%2Frichard%2Findex.htm' alt='' /></div>Richardnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22238085.post-88103961665848092752009-12-27T21:12:00.000-08:002009-12-29T23:29:56.653-08:00RIDE TO BORREGO & JULIAN 12/27/09<a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4040-768494.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4040-768058.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><br />Early Sunday morning just after Christmas and it's rather cold & nippy out so why not head into some really cold areas like Warner Springs at over 3,000 ft., and the town of Julian in North San Diego county at over 4,000 foot level with the desert town of Borrego in the middle. First thing to do is meet Ken at Denny's for breakfast and when he arrives learn that he totally missed Chapman Ave. and headed out to the 55 Fwy somewhere. No problem, we were still the first to arrive at the meeting point in the Best Buy Parking lot. Looks like it's Ken on his V-Star 1300, Luis & Minita on their V-Star 1300 and me on the white Road Star.<br /><br />I made sure I would not be cold on this outing and put on the Tourmaster Sabre Jacket with liner, a fleece jacket under that, neoprene face mask, Cold-tex gloves with liners and base layer leg liners. Hands got only a little chilly but no where near freezing cold as in the past. I'm finally figuring what gear works and when.<br /><br />We head out up the 57 Fwy to the 91 east and then turn south on the 15 Fwy toward Temecula. At route 79 we exit toward Warner Springs and the turn off to Montezuma Valley Road<iframe width="425" height="350" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=W+Chapman+Ave&daddr=I-15+N+to:I-15+S+to:Pala-Temecula+Rd+to:Palm+Canyon+Dr+to:CA-78+W+to:Washington+St+to:CA-78+W%2FCA-79+N%2FJulian+Rd+to:1011+snow+placentia,+ca&geocode=FbyTAwIdEQz5-A%3BFbLxBAIdDmT--A%3BFTTf_gEdepIE-Q%3BFb7d_QEdUmkF-Q%3BFVx0-wEdqiUQ-Q%3BFTgJ-QEdjMYO-Q%3BFQ67-AEduscM-Q%3BFT41-QEdmLML-Q%3BFSnYBAIdRsb5-Cl1DX0JpNbcgDH4OYtM09FGWg&hl=en&mra=mr&mrcr=2&via=3&sll=33.438318,-116.803894&sspn=1.109302,1.738586&ie=UTF8&ll=33.438318,-116.803894&spn=1.109302,1.738586&output=embed"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=embed&saddr=W+Chapman+Ave&daddr=I-15+N+to:I-15+S+to:Pala-Temecula+Rd+to:Palm+Canyon+Dr+to:CA-78+W+to:Washington+St+to:CA-78+W%2FCA-79+N%2FJulian+Rd+to:1011+snow+placentia,+ca&geocode=FbyTAwIdEQz5-A%3BFbLxBAIdDmT--A%3BFTTf_gEdepIE-Q%3BFb7d_QEdUmkF-Q%3BFVx0-wEdqiUQ-Q%3BFTgJ-QEdjMYO-Q%3BFQ67-AEduscM-Q%3BFT41-QEdmLML-Q%3BFSnYBAIdRsb5-Cl1DX0JpNbcgDH4OYtM09FGWg&hl=en&mra=mr&mrcr=2&via=3&sll=33.438318,-116.803894&sspn=1.109302,1.738586&ie=UTF8&ll=33.438318,-116.803894&spn=1.109302,1.738586" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small><br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/MONT-CURV-778913.jpg"><img style="float:right; Palomar<br /><br /><br /><br />I was in front for most of the ride and after questioning both Ken and Luis find that they are very happy with the pace I set while in the really curvy parts of the road, both down into Borrego and going up the Banner Grade to Julian. I hope they really mean it as I was happy with how I handled the turns and curves and only once did we have to pull over and let a couple cars zip past us. There is always someone that wants to go faster. Oh yes, we did get a fly-by along the way from two sport bike riders that just flew past over a double yellow. It's amazing how much straighter the road gets when you know how to take the curves by pushing down on the handlebars and using counter-steering, although I am still slower than other more experienced riders. I believe in "ride your own ride".<br /><br />We stopped at the same Mobil station in Temecula and after a quick $6 worth of gas, it's up the 15 to the 91 and then home. Total distance for me 295 miles start to finish, and about 8 1/2 hours total time.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/22238085-8810396166584809275?l=www.startriding.com%2Fblog%2Frichard%2Findex.htm' alt='' /></div>Richardnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22238085.post-55598428609215519272009-12-19T17:16:00.000-08:002009-12-20T11:37:11.341-08:00No-Pork ride 12-19We ride to No-Pork. What kind of name is No-Pork for a motorcycle repair shop? It means no HOGs or no Harleys. They just work on metric motorcycles and sell metric motorcycle parts and service. The riders include John R. on his no-windshield Roadliner, Luis & Minita V. on the red V-Star 1300, Charlie on the Stratoliner and Carol on her V-Star 1100, Scott on the big goldwing, Jim R. on a Royal Star 1300 Tour, Johney on his Road Star, Chuck on his back-in-action V-Star 1300, and me on the white Road Star. Stan showed his support by showing up but had to work instead. <a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4026-735352.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 252px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4026-735335.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4025-735299.JPG"><img style="float:right; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4025-734897.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><em><strong>Click the picture to read the text.</strong></em><br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4027-728422.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_4027-728000.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /> <br />Our route starts out in Orange and on to the 57 Fwy north to the 91 east then to the 15 Freeway south, exiting at Central Ave/Rte 74 in Lake Elsinore. The 74 is also known as the <strong>Ortega Highway </strong>and a favorite fast ride for other members like Pete Black and Jim Mc Clain as well.<br /><br />I gave Charlie our leader, a bad call on direction after checking with Scott (thanks), and after a quick U-Turn got headed back to the 74 west. Never tell Charlie how to go especially when he has a map.<br /><br />We start up the hill and into the twisting curvy part right away and all goes quite well with a good pace, not too fast but not too slow either. I'm sure some would have cranked it up a bit if they had a chance but we all kept a good pace. There was a lot of construction on Ortega over the past two years, but most of it is completed and it is a nicer road for sure. <strong>Google Earth </strong>pictures are taken while some of the construction was still going on.<a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/Scurve-2-723140.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 175px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/Scurve-2-722954.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/big-Scurve-722932.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 175px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/big-Scurve-722680.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/Lookout1-700749.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 175px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/Lookout1-700554.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a>This is at the first lookout just past a Food Shack on the way up-looking back toward Elsinore.<br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/curve-700531.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 175px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/curve-700341.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/curve2-719206.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 175px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/curve2-719009.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a>Lots of curves, both up and down hill.<br /><br /><br /><br />We came to Antonio Parkway and based on my recommendation we headed for Corky's Cafe in Ladera Ranch for food. It's not about what motorcycle brand or model you own or ride but that you have a passion for all things motorcycle. This includes motorcycle models especially cruisers, various clothing and gear items including jackets with armor, chrome, modifications to various elements of mechanical operation and repair or electrical components and even a subscription to a motorcycle magazine will help in your quest for qualification.<br /><br />2. <b>Naturally to be a true Wrinkle Rider </b>a number of wrinkles or lines or folds around the face or elsewhere, indicating some level of experience in life due to age is a major requirement, unless of course you are young and/or female then this issue is waived regardless.<br /><br />3. <b>Mileage</b> on the motorcycle or on yourself or a combination of both is a major enhancement to your fulfilling the goals of being a true Wrinkle Rider and will help in maintaining our high standards of membership.<br /><br />4. <b>"Ride to eat"</b> A major component of membership is a desire to sample various eating establishments near and far and partaking of any number of new or select types of food. Several food dishes and menu items have special merit including chili, hamburgers, Bar-B-Cue(BBQ) especially ribs, brisket and pulled pork, pizza or a variety of Italian foods, Mexican dishes, Black and White cookies, Deli foods including pastrami, corn beef and other sandwiches, beef jerky, smoked sausage (a new addition-see below) and other delicacies except Chinese food for some unknown reason.<br /><br />5. <b>Maintaining road discipline in group riding</b>. This is not a big issue here as long as you do not run into a fellow rider, turn in front of them or in any way cause another rider to have a mishap, what the heck do we care. Just arrive safely, maintain spacing but ride your own ride at your own safe pace and enjoy the ride.<br /><br />6. <b>Dues, meetings, requirements</b>. Apparently no one really likes to be bothered by responsibilities of administration, record keeping, dues collection, mileage records, attendance forms etc. therefore these are not an issue of this organization. However since we all like titles for rockers etc. for a small but reasonable fee you may choose a title appropriate to your interest in contributing to the treasury. Road Captain is available for $90, Tail Gunner is now priced at $50, Shepherd and Sargeant at Arms are available for $35 and other titles will be awarded as situations warrant. There is no plan for a club Chaplain ever. We hope the big money will be in logo patches for vests but have no plans as yet to print any so watch for further info on these areas.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/22238085-2381165026191784760?l=www.startriding.com%2Fblog%2Frichard%2Findex.htm' alt='' /></div>Richardnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22238085.post-41527450263649890762009-11-22T15:59:00.000-08:002009-11-23T10:07:58.136-08:00FTC, SAUSAGE TOUR AND PARTY====================================================================================<br /><strong>OUR ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY PLUS GIFT EXCHANGE AND A FUN TIME FOR ALL.</strong><br /><br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3980-716714.JPG"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3980-716267.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a>Just a few of the many friends in STAR. Thousands upon thousands and even, dare we say, millions of chickens are slaughtered every day! These poor helpless chickens are given food that lulls them into a false sense of security only to have the mask of comfort ripped cruelly from their psyches and led into a nightmare of death and destruction. Everyday these millions of well-fed and juicy plump chickens are led to their doom. Only to be served up as lunch or dinner for hungry people around the world. The time has come for motorcyclists and other caring individuals to stand up and say <strong>stop</strong>!<br /><br />It’s time we stood up and said “enough” we need a call to action. That’s why we have formed the “SAVE THE CHICKENS FOUNDATION”. Yes friends, only by forming a strong action awareness group can we hope to end this slaughter. And as everyone knows it takes money to get the attention this cause so rightfully deserves.<br /><br />That’s why we are inviting you to our first ride to “SAVE THE CHICKENS’ FUND RAISING LUNCHEON. The cost is just $25 and a wonderful and tasty roast chicken entrée will be served. Hope you can attend. Please RSVP soonest.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/22238085-1462437878405068360?l=www.startriding.com%2Fblog%2Frichard%2Findex.htm' alt='' /></div>Richardnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22238085.post-88221247820947850722009-11-10T13:44:00.000-08:002010-01-14T23:40:02.643-08:002nd Annual ride to Death Valley - 2009<strong>The return to Death Vally trip of 2009. <br /><br /></strong>Wayne and I rode up on Friday 11/06, another group consisting of Johney, Johney's cousin Cody, Johney's brother Mika, Chuck, John R., Luis and Minita on their V-Star 1300 and Joe on his new Victory Vision came riding up on Saturday 11/07. Joe rode up seperately to meet up with a group known as the Bob Hayes group consisting of about 20 riders from all over. This is a once a year meeting for the Bob Hayes group and it has been going on for about 18 years.<br /><br />We visited many of the same spots as last year on Saturday and Sunday including Scotty's castle, Ubehebe Crater, the Furnace Creek Ranch after visiting Dante's View and Bad Water the day before as well. Wayne and I did not go to Dante's View on Sunday with Johney and the others as we had already been there on Saturday. We went to sight see at Zabriski Point just south of Furnace Creek on the way to Dantes View road.<br /><br />Riding with Johney, Cody and his brother Mika is misleading. We followed them at an ever increasing distance, but did catch-up with them eventually at every stop.<br /><br />The other members of the group on Sunday decided to start out a little later and headed for Dante's View, they did see the sign that says DANTE'S VIEW 13 MILES, but missed the arrow pointing to the right down a narrow little road. Instead they continued on to Shoshone half way to Baker before turning around and missing it again on the way back. Oh well, something for next year.<br /><br />View the Picasa slide show to see all the pictures I took, including a few duplicates and don't miss <strong>Da Plane pictures</strong>, really something totally different.<br /><br />NO real incidents on the road for the most part, no mechanical issues and all arrived back home safe on Monday and maybe a bit tired. Total miles 1,020 for me.<br /><br />Gas in Furnace Creek was $4.12, gas in StovePipe Wells just 26 miles away $3.15.<br /><br /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="288" height="192" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&hl=en_US&feat=flashalbum&RGB=0x000000&feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2Frider67%2Falbumid%2F5402572304160147457%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26hl%3Den_US" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed><br /><br />Here's a link to Picasa album, you may need a log-in account to view.<br /><table style="width:194px;"><tr><td align="center" style="height:194px;background:url(http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/transparent_album_background.gif) no-repeat left"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/rider67/DEATHVALLEY2009?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_mf0Rqz4iDH0/SvnK4vbUSAE/AAAAAAAASU0/bTNvGuPtNnI/s160-c/DEATHVALLEY2009.jpg" width="160" height="160" style="margin:1px 0 0 4px;"></a></td></tr><tr><td style="text-align:center;font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:11px"><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/rider67/DEATHVALLEY2009?feat=embedwebsite" style="color:#4D4D4D;font-weight:bold;text-decoration:none;">DEATH VALLEY-2009</a></td></tr></table><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/22238085-8822124782094785072?l=www.startriding.com%2Fblog%2Frichard%2Findex.htm' alt='' /></div>Richardnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22238085.post-54068256232813466322009-10-25T18:19:00.001-07:002009-10-25T18:26:26.354-07:00Flo's Diner Chino Airport on a Saturday.<a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/FLOSCAFE-SAT.-795760.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/FLOSCAFE-SAT.-795756.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><br />A small contingent of our regular Thursday Bike Nite group also known as F.O.S. or Friends of Stan, breakfast at Flo's Diner on Saturday 10-25-09.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/22238085-5406825623281346632?l=www.startriding.com%2Fblog%2Frichard%2Findex.htm' alt='' /></div>Richardnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22238085.post-6033022056064430982009-10-10T20:48:00.000-07:002009-10-12T13:37:17.166-07:00Multi-chapter ride to Jalama Beach near Lompoc<strong>A LONG RIDE</strong> to<br /><strong>Meet up with friends from other STAR chapters</strong><br /><br />We meet up with several different chapters of STAR on the 101 up near Buellton (past Santa Barbara) and Hwy 1 turn-off to Lompoc and then head out to Jalama Beach. <a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3834-719003.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 189px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3834-718379.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /> Chapter 373, 415, 258 and several others were there including the 5 of us from 230. Wayne and I dropped back after we hit the 210 freeway, but Johney, Charlie and Joe took off and blasted their way through traffic.<br /><br />I think that hamburger really slowed me down it was so big because after lunch I really had a hard time keeping up with Johney and Charlie on the way back, it seemed like they were riding hell bent for leather, so I'm hoping it was not just me. Johney is always looking out for riders in his group, so I'm guessing I just needed a nap after lunch.<br />_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ <br /><strong>SPECIAL ADDED ATTRACTION: I ADDED A NEW PIECE OF CHROME.</strong><br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3836-751567.JPG"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3836-751141.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3835-751067.JPG"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3835-750655.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/22238085-603302205606443098?l=www.startriding.com%2Fblog%2Frichard%2Findex.htm' alt='' /></div>Richardnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22238085.post-85777327522873453522009-10-05T14:29:00.000-07:002009-10-05T18:15:38.854-07:00INTEGRATRON RIDE Saturday 10/04 (long report)<a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3814-767690.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3814-767291.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br />Our destination for this Saturday ride is the <strong>"Integratron"</strong> in Landers out beyond Yucca Valley. The Integratron is an all wood building that was built for some electrical experiments years ago. It never achieved any results but as an all wooden building has some unusual sound characteristics. The 2 level building is all hollow upstairs with a round parabolic shaped ceiling anchored at the top by a cement ring with a hole in it. If you stand directly under the hole in the center of the room and say something the sound reverberates through your head and body and sounds like speaking to a large outdoor or indoor audience with lots of echos and large speakers. Very strange no doubt. If you whisper from one side of the room, people on the opposite side can hear you clearly, which is why I got strange looks when I said my watch was running backwards from the electrical effects.<br /><br />There was a presentation that covered some of the history of the builder and the building. When they got to the part about aliens I sort of lost interest. Everyone was invited to take a blanket and lay out on the floor for meditation and a sound massage session with sounds provided by vibrations from crystal bowls and goblets. Remember how you can run your finger around the rim of a crystal goblet and get a nice humming sound? Well here in the Integratron it really is magnified and enhanced creating a peaceful and relaxing interlude while laying on the blankets. I however sat in a plastic chair. Several fell asleep based on snoring sounds.<br />CLICK ON THE VIDEO FOR A SAMPLE OF THE SOUNDS AND THE MEDITATION.<br /><br />This is one of the real benefits of riding with STAR chapter 230 as I would have never visited this attraction if it were not for the group and Dan our president planning this ride. This is what makes riding a motorcycle with some great friends and living through a real adventure on the road worth the ride. I'm glad I went. Great trip even though after taking a fair amount of time here and then heading back to Pioneer Town Restaurant near Yucca for a LONG lunch we wound up getting ready to leave at 3 pm. The route originally was to head on to Big Bear via the back (Hwy 18) way, but time was getting short. All three groups headed back the way we came, but this time we hit some wind. I seriously dislike wind. If you ever would catch me making an attempt at some sort of "prayer" it would be riding in a 40-50 mph wind coming from the side. This was not that bad luckily and on we went back to Orange with no real problems or incidents.<br /><br />RIDE STARTS WITH MORNING MEETING...<a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3795-764175.JPG"><img style="float:LEFT; Stopped for Lunch at Anderson's Split Pea Soup restaurant as I had never been there as far as I can remember. Place is getting a bit shabby around the edges, but food was good if a little pricey. It was pleasant until we passed Santa Barbara and turned inland then the heat started piling up rapidly. After lunch motored into Solvang for a brief stop and a Chocolate Eclair which we split. Bought a pin for my vest. <a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3776-719320.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 176px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3776-719015.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3775-718959.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3775-718534.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a> <a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3777-747835.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3777-747324.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /> ON the way back we took the inland route past Lake Cachuma and made just one stop above Santa Barbara<a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3778-748153.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 185px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3778-747876.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3780-770165.JPG"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3780-769714.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3779-769634.JPG"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 158px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3779-769390.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a> A quick stop on the highway.<a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3782-733014.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3782-732619.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3781-732548.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3781-732145.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><br /><br />Riding back into the LA freeway mess was brutal. Location is off Main St. and Third on Hesperia Rd. along some railroad tracks. It's a bit hard to find but after only one U-turn we arrived 74 miles from starting point. Breakfast was big. I ordered a hamburger steak, eggs and home fries. The hamburger was a very large hamburger steak, not a patty as I had thought it would be. Johney got biscuits and gravy with bacon. A very generous portion of biscuits smothered in gravy filled the plate and a lot of bacon. Every one had a plate FULL of food no matter what they ordered. <br />.<iframe width="425" height="240" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps/sv?cbp=12,283.65,,0,2.59&cbll=34.42533,-117.301308&panoid=&v=1&hl=en&gl=us"></iframe><br /><small><a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=embed&hl=en&geocode=&q=hesperia+blvd+%26+3rd+Hesperia,+CA&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=31.23349,55.810547&ie=UTF8&ll=34.271618,-117.434676&spn=0.490915,0.417223&layer=c&cbll=34.42533,-117.301308&panoid=L0aDpYwsHzh50jzcwSviKg&cbp=12,283.65,,0,2.59" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small><br /><br /><br />After a great breakfast, John R, Johney, Larry on his Venture, Joe on the Victory Vision, Ken and Richard all headed back to the rapidly warming Orange county area. We did see a rolled SUV on the 60 Fwy at the 57 when returning.<br />That's about it for today, Saturday Sept 5, 2009. Here is our first public bulletin and there may be more as membership grows. There should be an age limit but we decided that no matter how old you are you can join and are welcome to go on our rides. You should of course have some wrinkles just to show your commitment to the objectives and goals of our club.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/wrinkleriders-letterboard-779787.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 243px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/wrinkleriders-letterboard-779780.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/22238085-957148950277619482?l=www.startriding.com%2Fblog%2Frichard%2Findex.htm' alt='' /></div>Richardnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22238085.post-47720407196057455782009-08-21T22:39:00.000-07:002009-08-21T22:44:20.342-07:00No rides scheduled for a whileI have been out of action for about 3 weeks or so due to a kidney stone. Getting rid of it is a rather painful process and this was the second one in less than a year. Along with the kidney stone have been some complications and after effects due in part to the medication to help with pain. As soon as I get back to normal (?) hope to get a ride in to northern California possibly. Will keep you posted an thanks for reading my Blog.<br />Richard (Wrinkle Rider)<div class="blogger-post-footer"><img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/22238085-4772040719605745578?l=www.startriding.com%2Fblog%2Frichard%2Findex.htm' alt='' /></div>Richardnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22238085.post-74736863337380962782009-07-23T21:31:00.001-07:002009-07-24T11:57:09.248-07:00Flag lowering Ceremony<a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3680-742984.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3680-742607.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3681-742535.JPG"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://www.startriding.com/blog/richard/uploaded_images/IMG_3681-742170.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a><br />A group of Patriot Guard Riders are joined by several members of STAR Chapter 230 on Wednesday evenings to help with lowering and folding the flag. I also moved the red reflectors and PASHNIT sticker from the other bags and they are sticking to the new bags so far.
